The method
How the job runs
The order matters more than most people expect — several of these steps stop the one after it going wrong.
Work out what the finish is
Lacquer, oil, wax or bare timber all behave differently. We check and test before choosing an approach, because the wrong one takes the finish off.
Get the grit off
Everything loose comes off dry first. Grit under a cleaning pad is sandpaper, and that's how floors get scratched during a clean.
Clean with controlled moisture
Enough to lift the dirt and the greasy film that builds up from years of household cleaners, and no more. Nothing gets flooded, and nothing sits in the joints.
Take the moisture straight back off
The floor is dried as we go rather than left to evaporate, so water never gets time to find its way between boards.

This is cleaning, not sanding
Scratches, dents and worn-through finish are damage to the surface. Cleaning takes the dirt off; it doesn't put a finish back on. If a floor genuinely needs sanding and re-coating, we'll tell you that instead of charging you to find out.
Old floors have gaps
Boards that have shrunk apart can't have liquid poured over them. That's a limit on how deep any clean can go, and it's a good reason not to let anyone steam a gappy floor.
Re-oiling and re-coating
If your floor looks like it wants a fresh coat rather than a clean, ask when you enquire and we'll tell you honestly what's involved.

Will cleaning damage the finish?
Not when the method matches the finish, which is why we check and test first. The damage usually comes from steam mops and from wet-mopping an oiled floor — both put water where the timber can take it in.
My floor looks dull even when it's clean. Why?
Usually a film of old cleaning product, polish or soap built up over years. That's exactly what this job takes off, and it's the change most people actually notice.
Can you make a badly scratched floor look new?
No. Scratches are through the finish and cleaning doesn't fill them in. What we can do is take everything off it that isn't wood, so you're looking at the floor rather than at years of residue.
